Bob Lawrence

Orange County-born trombonist, arranger and educator Bob Lawrence is an active voice in the Los Angeles jazz community, with roots in both rigorous study and wide-ranging ensemble work.

Lawrence’s story is one of craft becoming versatility: deep jazz training, arranging and teaching, then the kind of ensemble fluency that can move naturally from large-format jazz to the distinctive colors of Afro-Peruvian music.

Joey Sellers was part of the beginning.

Lawrence attended Saddleback College from 2008 to 2010, studying under Joey Sellers before graduating from Los Angeles College of Music.

A Grammy-nominated Latin jazz connection.

He played trombone on the Afro-Peruvian Jazz Orchestra album Tradiciones, nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album.

The relationship came full circle onstage.

In August 2026 Lawrence appeared at Campus JAX in Funny Bones: A Trombone Summit and, on August 27, with Joey Sellers’ Jazz Aggregation.

THE STORY

The story

Born in Orange County, Bob Lawrence developed as a trombonist, arranger and educator through a path that connects directly to Southern California jazz. He attended Saddleback College from 2008 to 2010 and studied under Joey Sellers before graduating from Los Angeles College of Music. His recording work includes trombone on the Afro-Peruvian Jazz Orchestra’s Tradiciones, a Grammy-nominated Best Latin Jazz Album. That long arc returned to Campus JAX in August 2026, first with Funny Bones: A Trombone Summit and then with Joey Sellers’ Jazz Aggregation on August 27.

EDUCATION & TEACHING

The foundation

Lawrence attended Saddleback College from 2008 to 2010, where he studied under Joey Sellers, and later graduated from Los Angeles College of Music. That training sits alongside his ongoing work as a music educator and arranger.
