MEET THE ARTIST
Tawanda
Award-winning multinational jazz vocalist, recording artist and international performer whose professional career began on the Campus JAX outdoor stage in 2020.
Campus JAX did not meet Tawanda after the breakthrough. It met her at the beginning. Her first professional performance arrived on June 11, 2020, on a parking-lot stage built because the usual rooms had gone dark. Every return since then has made the same relationship more meaningful: the singer grew, the audience grew, and the first stage remained part of the story.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW THEM
Five reasons Tawanda matters here — and far beyond this room.
THE FIRST DOWNBEAT
June 11, 2020
Her first professional performance happened on Campus JAX's outdoor pandemic stage. The archive preserves not a retrospective anecdote, but the actual beginning.
THE VOICE
Precision without distance
Tawanda can make a standard feel conversational, then let the same voice rise over a full horn section without surrendering nuance.
THE RECOGNITION
A Sarah Vaughan winner
Her 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition win placed formal recognition behind what Campus JAX audiences had already begun to hear.
THE RECORDING ARTIST
Smile and beyond
Her 2022 Resonance Records debut Smile and her appearance on Ivan Lins' Grammy-nominated My Heart Speaks moved the story decisively into recorded music.
THE RETURN
History you can hear
From trio dates to a 12-piece big band, each return to Campus JAX lets the audience hear how an artist changes while the relationship holds.
THE STORY
Before the awards, there was a parking-lot stage.
On June 11, 2020, Tawanda walked onto the outdoor Campus JAX parking-lot stage and began a professional career in a setting nobody would have designed on purpose. Indoor rooms had gone silent. Musicians and audiences were separated by distance, circumstance and uncertainty. Campus JAX built a stage outside, and Tawanda gave her first professional performance. The significance of that night is easy to understand only in retrospect. The singer on that stage had already done the private work — studying contemporary music and jazz vocals at Santa Fe University of Art and Design, absorbing the songbook and developing the instrument — but she had not yet accumulated the public markers by which careers are usually summarized. There was no Sarah Vaughan title, no Resonance Records debut, no BISTRO Award, no international Postmodern Jukebox tours. There was simply the voice, the band and the first real room, even if the room happened to be a parking lot under pandemic conditions. Campus JAX kept listening. Several of Tawanda's earliest professional performances happened here, first in the improvised outdoor chapter and later on the venue's permanent stage. The archive catches the development in real time: confidence becoming command, repertoire becoming point of view, a promising singer becoming a recording artist able to carry both a trio and a big band. In 2021, Tawanda won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. In 2022, Resonance Records released her debut album Smile. The following year brought a BISTRO Outstanding Achievement Award for Jazz Vocalists and an appearance on Brazilian composer Ivan Lins' Grammy-nominated album My Heart Speaks. In 2024, four tours with Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox took her across the United States and Europe. Those credentials matter, but the Campus JAX story gives them shape. Tawanda is not special to this venue because a résumé became impressive. She is special because the relationship predates the résumé. The first professional performance is not a line added after the fact; it is a moment JAX helped make possible and a moment the JAXblast archive can still show. That is why a return engagement carries more than nostalgia. When Tawanda stands inside Brian Clemens' large-ensemble arrangements, the scale has changed dramatically from that first outdoor night. The essential proposition has not. Put an exceptional singer in front of a listening audience, give the music room to breathe, and preserve the moment so it can continue to matter.
CAREER & COLLABORATIONS
From intimate trio language to a full horn section.
Tawanda's work is defined by range of context as much as range of repertoire. At Campus JAX she has appeared with musicians including Josh Nelson, Tamir Hendelman, Kevin Axt and Gene Coye, and has returned repeatedly for full concerts under her own name. Beyond JAX, she has performed with Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, appeared with Jeff Goldblum's band and been featured on Ivan Lins' My Heart Speaks. Her recurring work with Brian Clemens offers a different kind of frame: a substantial big-band book in which the orchestration responds to the singer rather than merely surrounding her.
RECORDINGS & MEDIA
A debut built on joy, control and invitation.
Smile, released by Resonance Records in 2022, introduced Tawanda as a recording artist with deep respect for the jazz-vocal tradition and no interest in treating it like a museum. The album's title suits the performing presence: warmth is part of the communication, but never a substitute for technique. Her appearance on Ivan Lins' Grammy-nominated My Heart Speaks widened that recorded story, while the JAXblast archive preserves something albums cannot: the visible development from a June 2020 debut through later trio performances, anniversary returns and big-band collaborations.
EDUCATION & TEACHING
Training became a foundation, not a boundary.
Raised in New Mexico with German and Mozambican roots, Tawanda studied at Santa Fe University of Art and Design and earned a bachelor's degree in Contemporary Music focused on jazz vocals. That training is audible in her control of time, lyric and harmony. The larger identity is more expansive: an artist able to move between standards, soul, global rhythms and contemporary arrangements while retaining a clear center.
AWARDS & RECOGNITION
The world caught up.
Tawanda was a winner of the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and received a 2023 BISTRO Outstanding Achievement Award for Jazz Vocalists. Those honors arrived after Campus JAX audiences had already heard the beginning. Recognition continued through recordings and international performance: Smile on Resonance Records, a feature on Ivan Lins' Grammy-nominated My Heart Speaks, and four U.S. and European tours with Postmodern Jukebox in 2024. For JAXblast, the deeper distinction is continuity — the ability to place those achievements beside the first performance and show the distance traveled.
