MEET THE ARTIST

Shane Sato

Orange County-raised drummer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter whose music moves freely between modern jazz, neo-soul, indie R&B and groove-driven instrumental music.

Shane Sato's music is useful evidence of where a younger jazz vocabulary is heading. The improvisational language remains, but it shares the frame with neo-soul pocket, indie R&B texture and producer-minded detail. Wavelength does not ask the listener to choose a genre first. It starts with feel.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW THEM

Three ways into Shane Sato.

01

THE POCKET

The drums lead without crowding the song.

Sato's identity begins at the kit, but the larger point is arrangement: groove becomes structure rather than decoration.

02

THE PRODUCER

Wavelength thinks in texture as much as harmony.

The 2026 album moves through modern jazz, neo-soul and indie R&B with a producer's attention to space, color and repetition.

03

THE HOMECOMING

Orange County is part of the arc.

The September 24 Campus JAX date brings a Los Angeles-based creative career back to the community where Sato came up.

THE STORY

From Orange County outward — then back again.

Shane Sato came through the Southern California jazz community and built outward from there: drummer first, then multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and collaborator. That widening vocabulary is the story behind Wavelength. The album is not a retreat from jazz but an expansion of what the form can comfortably hold — pocket, melody, electronic texture, indie R&B color and the shared language of collaborators from adjacent scenes. By the time the project reaches Campus JAX, the homecoming matters because the music no longer sounds like a young player proving he belongs to a tradition. It sounds like an artist deciding what the tradition can become.

RECORDINGS & MEDIA

Wavelength: connection as a musical idea.

Released in 2026 on Mixto Records, Wavelength is Shane Sato's sophomore album and the clearest statement of his current musical identity. Collaborators including Braxton Cook, Reuben James, Nao Yoshioka, Box Dreams and Oli-J widen the palette without breaking the project's center of gravity: melody, groove and connection.
