MEET THE ARTIST

Ryan DeWeese

Los Angeles trumpeter, recording artist, educator and leader of the RAD Jazz Orchestra. Ryan DeWeese connects the precision of the studio with the energy of a jazz orchestra onstage.

One trumpet can tell a story. A whole orchestra can carry it across the room. Ryan’s work invites you to listen for both: the individual voice and the musicians moving together around it.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW THEM

Five ways into Ryan’s world.

01

THE BAND IS HIS OWN

A voice with an orchestra around it.

RAD is the place to hear Ryan’s identity as a bandleader. Begin with the 2024 album, then follow the orchestra into the JAX archive.

02

BEHIND THE RECORD

You may already know the sound.

His recording credits include Michael Bublé’s love and Higher, and Idina Menzel’s Christmas: A Season of Love.

03

THE WORKING MUSICIAN

A musician in more than one setting.

The distance between a recording session and a live jazz orchestra is part of what makes this profile worth exploring. Hear the band, then follow the credits.

04

THE EDUCATOR

The next player matters, too.

His teaching spans individual brass technique and improvisation through work with school ensembles.

05

THE JAX CONNECTION

Two earlier nights. A continuing story.

Watch the June 4, 2024 and April 24, 2025 performances, then join the October 29, 2026 birthday concert.

THE STORY

The player. The leader. The room.

Ryan DeWeese speaking between pieces at Campus JAX, April 24, 2025

Ryan’s musical life has taken him from study in New York to the recording rooms and bandstands of Southern California. The trumpet is his point of entry, but the larger picture includes playing, leading and teaching. His RAD Jazz Orchestra gives that larger picture a sound of its own. Recorded in January 2023 and released in March 2024, the ensemble’s first album established a place to hear the group beyond a single concert. At Campus JAX, that recorded identity meets the immediacy of the room. The June 4, 2024 and April 24, 2025 broadcasts offer two visits to return to; the photographs on this page come from those performances. The October 29, 2026 birthday concert continues the JAX connection. No. 019-A preserves the April 24, 2025 performance as its own collectible chapter.
