MEET THE ARTIST

Pretzel Logic

An 11-piece Southern California Steely Dan revue built around three vocalists, three horns, a five-piece rhythm section and the discipline to make studio-level detail breathe onstage.

Steely Dan made records where every note appears inevitable. Onstage, inevitability has to be rebuilt in real time. Pretzel Logic succeeds when the arrangement stops feeling like a diagram and starts moving like a band.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW THEM

Three reasons to listen closely.

01

THE CRAFT

The songs expose shortcuts.

Dense harmony, interlocking rhythm parts and exacting horn writing leave very little room for approximation. This repertoire makes the quality of the ensemble audible.

02

THE ENSEMBLE

Eleven players. One pocket.

Three vocalists, three horns and a five-piece rhythm section only work when everyone agrees on time, balance and space. The scale is impressive; the listening is the real achievement.

03

THE CATALOG

The hits are only the doorway.

With more than 70 songs available, Pretzel Logic can move beyond the inevitable favorites and reward listeners who know how deep the Steely Dan songbook runs.

THE STORY

Studio music, returned to the room.

Steely Dan’s catalog carries a particular risk for any live band: reproduce only the surface and the music turns into polish without tension; chase every recorded detail and it can stop breathing. Pretzel Logic’s answer is scale, discipline and flexibility. The 11-piece format gives the arrangements enough color to honor the records, while the rotating-player model keeps the emphasis on musicians capable of making decisions in real time. The band is not trying to make the audience forget that it is watching a live performance. The point is to reveal what the songs become when the parts must listen to one another again. That is why the Campus JAX setting matters. The audience is close enough to see the work: a cue passed across the stage, a horn phrase locking with the rhythm section, a harmony settling into place. Studio precision becomes visible human coordination. The recording may be the reference, but the moment belongs to the room.

CAREER & COLLABORATIONS

A band built for demanding music.

Across its rotating lineup, Pretzel Logic includes musicians whose work has intersected with artists including Elton John, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan, Bruce Hornsby, Stanley Clarke, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, Simon Phillips and Ronnie Laws. Those names are not decoration; they help explain why the ensemble can move naturally between rock weight, jazz harmony, R&B pocket and horn-driven precision.
