MEET THE ARTIST

Kristin Korb

Jazz bassist, vocalist and arranger Kristin Korb turns the upright bass into a second singing voice. A Ray Brown protégé who made her 1996 recording debut with his trio, she brings a lifetime of swing, storytelling and joyful musical conversation to Campus JAX.

Korb does not alternate between singer and bassist. She lets lyric, pulse and improvisation speak together. Her mentor Ray Brown shaped her rhythmic foundation; her own arrangements and warmth make that inheritance unmistakably hers.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW THEM

Five reasons Kristin Korb belongs on your listening list.

01

THE DOUBLE VOICE

She sings from inside the groove

02

THE LINEAGE

Ray Brown was her teacher — and her recording partner

Her 1996 debut, Introducing Kristin Korb, was made with the Ray Brown Trio. The centennial program is a tribute grounded in personal experience, not just admiration.

03

THE REIMAGINER

Eurythmics becomes jazz, without losing its soul

Sweet Dreams (2024) turns twelve songs associated with Eurythmics and Annie Lennox into newly arranged musical conversations.

04

THE EDUCATOR

The knowledge keeps moving

Kristin studied at Eastern Montana College and UC San Diego, then taught at institutions including USC and Central Washington University.

Tonight, a student honors her mentor

THE STORY

How a bass player learned to tell the whole story.

Kristin Korb did not set out to be a novelty act who happened to sing while playing upright bass. At the University of California, San Diego, where she earned a master's degree in classical bass performance, professor Bertram Turetzky encouraged her to make music with both instruments at once. That simple musical challenge became a signature voice. Then came Ray Brown. Kristin studied with the jazz-bass legend and recorded Introducing Kristin Korb with the Ray Brown Trio in 1996. What she carried forward was more than technical mastery: the confident pulse, generous swing and invitation to make a room feel the music together. Her career has connected stages, recordings and classrooms across the United States and Europe. After moving to Denmark in 2011, Korb continued touring internationally, arranging, performing and teaching. In 2024 she pushed the idea of the jazz songbook in another direction with Sweet Dreams, recasting Eurythmics material in her own language. The Vocal Side of Ray Brown brings that story back to its origin. With Josh Nelson at the piano and Kevin van den Elzen at the drums, she celebrates her mentor in his centennial year — not through imitation, but through the living music he helped her find.
