Jim Wooten

Multi-instrumentalist bassist, guitarist and vocalist whose classic-rock work spans Led Zepagain, The Long Run and CSN&Y repertoire. In Classic Vinyl Live, Jim is the foundation player who also understands the architecture above it.

In Led Zepagain, Jim Wooten does far more than hold down the root notes: he covers the multi-instrumental John Paul Jones role. That changes the way you hear him in Boston. The low end is only the beginning; Jim thinks like an arranger.

His father Red Wooten was a professional bassist, while Les Paul and Mary Ford were Jim’s uncle and aunt. The lineage is notable; the versatility Jim built from it is the real story.

THE STORY

More than the low end.

A bassist can disappear into a great arrangement and still be doing the job perfectly. Jim Wooten makes that disappearing act more interesting because he understands the arrangement from several other chairs. In Led Zepagain he has to think like John Paul Jones: bass one moment, keyboards or mandolin the next, always aware of how harmony and texture are moving around him. That background makes the Boston assignment at Campus JAX feel almost inevitable. Jim gives the songs weight without making them heavy and structure without making them rigid.
