THE STORY

Performance on the stand. Architecture on the page.

James McMillen's role in The BBB reaches from the trombone section to the page. He performs inside the ensemble, but he also writes and arranges music that determines what the ensemble has to become: how a groove is framed, how sections answer one another and where a solo can open the form. The Pugilist is a particularly clear document. McMillen wrote the title track and “Rico's Rowdy Rhumba,” and the album credits him with multiple arrangements. Number One Son adds another songwriting credit, extending that creative role into the band's newest recorded chapter. The JAX archive connects BBB broadcasts from October 2025, January 2026 and October 2026. Heard in sequence, they make visible a musician whose contribution is both performed and composed.
