MEET THE ARTIST

Djordje Stijepovic

Upright slap bassist, composer and singer whose work moves through rockabilly, jazz, world music and contemporary big-band performance.

Stijepovic makes the upright impossible to treat as background. The slap is percussive, the line is structural, and the physical performance becomes part of what the audience hears.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW THEM

Three ways into the sound.

01

THE TECHNIQUE

The slap carries the pulse.

Listen for the upright's attack alongside guitar and drums; it gives The BBB a rhythmic color few large ensembles possess.

02

THE RANGE

One instrument, several musical worlds.

His official biography connects Tiger Army, Atomic Sunset, the Head Cat and Fishtank Ensemble with formal study in classical and jazz bass.

03

THE JAX THREAD

A return makes the role clear.

The October 2025 and October 2026 BBB broadcasts document the slap-bass chair as a recurring part of the orchestra.

THE STORY

The upright, brought forward.

Djordje Stijepovic brings the upright bass into full view. In The BBB, the instrument is not only the floor beneath the ensemble; its slap attack becomes part of the band's rhythmic identity, answering guitar and drums while sixteen voices move around it. His own musical story crosses rockabilly, jazz and world music. Trained in classical double bass performance as well as jazz bass and arranging, he has built a career around the physical language of the upright: pulse, articulation and stage presence working as one. His official biography connects that sound with Tiger Army, Atomic Sunset, the Head Cat and Fishtank Ensemble. The Campus JAX archive adds a focused big-band chapter. Stijepovic appears with The BBB in the October 23, 2025 broadcast and returns for the October 4, 2026 performance. The second appearance makes the first easier to hear: this is not a novelty color, but a recurring part of the orchestra's design.
