MEET THE ARTIST

Dave Richards

Trumpeter and arranger whose work connects jazz-orchestra performance, composition and the disciplined craft of the brass section.

Richards approaches the trumpet with an awareness of the entire score. His line has to speak, but it also has to make the architecture around it work.

THE STORY

A brass voice with the score in view.

Dave Richards is a brass player with an arranger's sense of architecture. In The BBB, his trumpet voice sits inside a section built for power and precision, while his arranging credits reveal the thinking behind the sound: voicing, pacing and the placement of every entrance. Richards studied jazz arranging and jazz composition at the University of North Texas and played trumpet and trombone in the One O'Clock Lab Band. His professional path has included big bands, touring musical theater and work with Tower of Power. The JAX archive shows that range in context. Richards appears with the Teryn Ré Big Band in 2021, then in BBB broadcasts from October 2025, January 2026 and October 2026. Across those rooms, the through-line is ensemble craft—how an individual brass voice strengthens the design around it.
