MEET THE ARTIST

Brian Scanlon

Saxophonist and woodwind doubler whose career joins jazz improvisation, studio precision and the modern large-ensemble tradition.

Scanlon can make a line disappear into the ensemble or step forward with a complete voice. His JAX appearances show that flexibility across four different band settings.

THE STORY

Four ensembles, one evolving archive.

Brian Scanlon brings a studio musician's adaptability to the front line of a jazz orchestra. Soprano and alto saxophone are his announced voices for the October 2026 BBB performance, but his broader work spans tenor saxophone, clarinet and flute as well as film, television and recording sessions. Scanlon studied with Ramon Ricker at the Eastman School of Music, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. He is widely heard as the first tenor saxophonist in Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, including featured solo work, and has developed his own recorded voice as a leader. His JAX trail reaches from Gordon Goodwin's Little Phat Band in 2020 to the Dave Slonaker Big Band in 2022 and repeated BBB broadcasts in 2025 and 2026. That sequence is a compact history of one player moving through several versions of the Los Angeles large-ensemble tradition.
