MEET THE ARTIST

Brian Clemens

Pianist, arranger, composer and transatlantic bandleader whose writing brings big-band scale together with the melodic instincts of a songwriter.

Brian Clemens does not treat a large ensemble as decoration. The horns are architecture: a way to reveal the shape of a song, redirect its energy and give a vocalist more room rather than less. That is why his programs can cross swing, Latin jazz, soul, Motown, R&B and pop without feeling like a playlist. The arranger's ear holds the night together.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW THEM

Five ways Brian Clemens makes a big band feel personal.

THE ARRANGER

Every horn has a reason

Clemens writes for the ensemble as a living system — voicings, countermelodies and rhythmic shifts all serve the emotional shape of the song.

THE PIANIST

Inside the arrangement

Leading from the piano keeps him inside the pulse of the band, able to shape transitions and support the vocalist in real time.

THE SONGWRITER

Melody before spectacle

His work with Luminoso and the album 3-2-1! reveals the songwriter beneath the bandleader: structure and story remain central even at full scale.

THE TRANSATLANTIC LEADER

Los Angeles to London

A career spanning Southern California and European rooms gives his big-band language both American roots and an international working life.

THE COLLABORATOR

A book built for Tawanda

The recurring Campus JAX partnership works because the arrangements frame a singular vocalist instead of asking her to compete with the band.

THE STORY

An arranger is a storyteller with more voices.

Brian Clemens began in Los Angeles and built a working life that now moves between American jazz language and the bandstands of London and Europe. He earned a master's degree in Jazz Performance and Commercial Music, studied with Grammy-winning pianist and arranger Bill Cunliffe, and developed the craft from both sides of the music stand: pianist inside the rhythm section, arranger responsible for the whole field of sound. That dual perspective matters. A pianist can react in the moment; an arranger must imagine the moment before anyone plays it. Clemens' best work holds both instincts at once. The form is prepared, but the performance remains alive. After relocating to London, he founded Luminoso, a jazz-pop group devoted to original songs shaped by the Great American Songbook, swing, Latin music, R&B and orchestral pop. As principal songwriter and arranger behind much of the group's debut album 3-2-1!, Clemens established the musical priority that also defines his big-band work: melody and storytelling come first. Size is not the point. Color is. The European chapter widened through performances at Nardis Jazz Club in Istanbul, Jamboree in Barcelona, b-flat in Berlin and PizzaExpress Jazz Club in London. He also developed touring big-band productions for UK theatres and recurring presentations at Wilton's Music Hall, while maintaining a parallel life as a pianist and musical director in major London rooms. Campus JAX brings the transatlantic career home. Here the writing can be heard not as résumé but as physical experience: brass lifting the ceiling, reeds changing the color of a phrase, the rhythm section turning a standard or pop song toward a new center. The recurring collaboration with Tawanda is the clearest expression of that approach. Her voice does not sit on top of the band. It moves through it. Clemens can answer a held note with brass, clear space around a lyric, or turn a familiar groove just enough to make the song arrive fresh. Across full Campus JAX broadcasts in 2024, 2025 and 2026, the partnership has become its own body of work. That is the useful way to hear Brian Clemens: not simply as a pianist who leads a big band, but as a storyteller choosing among twelve voices, eight horns and one extraordinary singer.

CAREER & COLLABORATIONS

The band is the instrument.

Clemens' career crosses several ensemble scales. Luminoso gives him a songwriter-led jazz-pop laboratory. His UK theatre productions and Wilton's Music Hall presentations expand that language to the big-band stage. Regular work in London's leading hotels keeps the pianist's touch connected to the immediate demands of a room. At Campus JAX, the enduring collaboration is with Tawanda. Multiple full broadcasts document how the partnership has developed: the arrangements become more than accompaniment, and the singer becomes more than a featured name. Each shapes how the other is heard.

RECORDINGS & MEDIA

The songwriter behind the voicings.

On Luminoso's debut album 3-2-1!, Clemens serves as principal songwriter and arranger for much of the material. The record explains why his big-band programs travel comfortably across genre lines: the connective tissue is not style but songcraft. The Campus JAX archive extends that recorded identity into live performance, from the Beneath the Blue release concert to successive Brian Clemens Big Band programs with Tawanda. Together, those broadcasts reveal continuity between original writing, arrangement and musical direction.

EDUCATION & TEACHING

Technique in service of the room.

Clemens earned a master's degree in Jazz Performance and Commercial Music and studied with Bill Cunliffe, a Grammy-winning pianist and arranger. The education matters not as a credential alone but as a working toolkit: harmony, orchestration, piano technique and the ability to translate an idea clearly for an ensemble. His official practice also includes academic and teaching work, completing the circle between analysis, explanation and performance.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

A transatlantic working résumé.

The most telling recognition in Clemens' career is the range of rooms that continue to invite the work back. Luminoso has appeared at leading clubs across Europe, including Nardis in Istanbul, Jamboree in Barcelona, b-flat in Berlin and PizzaExpress in London. His big-band productions have reached UK theatres and historic Wilton's Music Hall, while his piano work includes regular engagements at The Ritz London and other major London venues. At Campus JAX, recurring return engagements have produced a growing broadcast archive — evidence not of a one-off concept, but of a collaboration with a musical life of its own.
