MEET THE ARTIST

Alex Budman

Multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger whose saxophone and clarinet work joins large-ensemble jazz with the Los Angeles studio world.

Budman's JAX credits change instruments between BBB appearances. That shift is not trivia; it reveals the fluency a modern reed section requires.

THE STORY

A reed player with the full score in mind.

Alex Budman is the kind of musician large ensembles depend on: a distinctive saxophone voice, fluency on clarinet and other instruments, and the composer's understanding of how one line fits the complete score. Before moving to Los Angeles, Budman led the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra in the Bay Area and co-led the Budman/Levy Orchestra. His recorded and studio work has crossed jazz, popular music, film and television, but the large ensemble remains an especially revealing frame for his musicianship. At Campus JAX, Budman appears with The BBB in the October 23, 2025 broadcast and returns on October 4, 2026. The announced chairs change between those performances—tenor saxophone in 2025, alto saxophone and clarinet in 2026—making his versatility part of the archive itself.
